The fourth-most populous and state, New York has nearly 19.8 million people in 62 counties, including almost 3.3 million with Medicare. The many carriers are good news, as more than 10,000 members of Medicare Advantage in New York lost their coverage on Jan. 1, 2016, when the White Plains-based Touchstone Health HMO ended operations.
The state’s top-rated plans in 2017, according to U.S. News & World Report, all received 4.5/5 stars, and included those from BlueCross and BlueShield of WNY and BlueShield of NEN, CDPHP Medicare Choices, Independent Health and MVP Health Care. Among these plans are: HMOs, PPOs, PFFS (Private Fee-for-Service) plans and MSA (Medical Savings Account) plans. Special Needs Plans (SNPs) are also available for those eligible (e.g., certain chronic conditions, institutional residences).
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2018, 2,207,942 residents enrolled in Original Medicare and 1,404,243 residents enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
