Medicare Advantage New Mexico

New Mexico has had one of the higher enrollment rates for Medicare Advantage in the last nine years. As of 2022, nearly half (49%) of Medicare customers in the Land of Enchantment chose a private plan over Original Medicare per data from the Kaiser Family Foundation. That’s just above the national average of 45%.

By law, Medicare Advantage plans cover at least the same benefits as Original Medicare (Parts A and B together). But these plans also tend to cover benefits that Original doesn’t, like prescription drugs, dental and vision, gym memberships and more.

As a tradeoff for better benefits, you may have an extra premium with these plans.

You’ll always be responsible for the premiums under Original Medicare, which usually means only Part B, but some Advantage plans charge an additional premium for the private plan itself. Others don’t.

In 2023, the average premium for a Medicare Advantage plan in New Mexico will be just under $12 a month according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Every Medicare enrollee in New Mexico will have access to at least one Medicare Advantage plan and at least one plan with a $0 premium. Statewide, there will be 72 private plans available from different carriers, though your zip code will determine which plans you can buy.

Insurance companies offering Medicare Advantage plans in New Mexico include UnitedHealthcare/AARP, Molina, Cigna, Aetna, Humana and BlueCross BlueShield.
