With a population of almost 6.62 million, Indiana’s 92 counties are home to nearly1.15 million Medicare beneficiaries, including almost 275,000 Medicare Advantage enrollees. A little over 225,000 have purchased plans offering Part D prescription drug coverage.
While an estimated 48 carriers provide Medicare Advantage in Indiana, Humana is the state’s largest, representing 35 percent of all enrollees. In terms of plan ratings, Health Alliance Medicare was called the highest rated carrier in the state, in 2017, by U.S. News & World Report. It earned 4.50/5 stars.
Other carriers’ plans include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Highmark and Priority Health, Selectcare. As of Jan. 1, 2016, those interested in Medicare Advantage in Indiana gained additional plan options, as CareSource, a leading nationwide managed care plan, increased its available policies. As a result, 33 Indiana counties now have access to CareSource plans.
Enrollees can select various Medicare Advantage plans, including: HMOs with Point-of-Service (POS; HMOs allowing out-of-network providers); PPOs; Provider Sponsored Organizations (PSOs; in-network managed care plans; PPFS (Private Fee-for-Service) plans; and Medical Saving Accounts (MSAs; policy-savings account combinations. Eligible residents may also choose Special Need Plans (SNPs).
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2018, 903,265 residents enrolled in Original Medicare and 352,022 residents enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
