Medicare Advantage represents a smaller percentage of the Medicare population in Delaware than it does in many parts of the country. Nationally, over a third of Medicare members choose the private option (Advantage) over Original (Parts A and B together).
In Delaware, enrollment into Advantage represents just 17% of the Medicare population here, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. In total, Medicare enrollment in Delaware tops 214,000 in 2020 per the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
But enrollment here is growing. Between 2018 and 2020, enrollment into Medicare Advantage in Delaware grew by 4 percentage points.
That may be due to the increasingly good value that Medicare Advantage plans offer. Delaware Medicare members who choose a private option can expect an average premium of $19.53 a month in 2021 per the CMS.
Some plans won’t have a premium at all, other than the premiums you’d pay already for Parts A and B. Every Medicare member in Delaware will have access to at least one Advantage plan with a $0 premium for next year.
Choices for Medicare Advantage are increasing nationwide as well. Next year, Delaware will have 23 Advantage plans available, though not every person has access to the same plans or carriers in the state. Where you live matters, as plan options are determined by zip code.
Aetna, Humana and Cigna are among the carriers offering Medicare Advantage plans to the general Medicare population in the First State.
