The country’s third largest state has approximately 5.7 million residents that are eligible for Medicare and in 2016, a little more than half of them enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, which may be due to the fact that Californians have approximately 70 different carrier options for their Medicare Advantage and Part D plans.
Californians can choose a number of different Medicare Advantage plan options such as PPO, HMO, PFFS (Private-Fee-for-Service plan). Additionally, if a California Medicare eligible consumer is also low income, they may be eligible for Medicaid assistance through the State of California as well.
Most of the big-named carriers offer Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug coverage in the state of California, including Molina, Humana, Highmark, HealthNet, UHC, Aetna and BCBS, but Kaiser Permanente is deemed the best Medicare Advantage plan in the State of California, in 2017, with 5/5 stars. Caremore Health Plan is the second best 4.50/5.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2018, 3,762,104 residents enrolled in Original Medicare and 2,462,728 residents enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Californians who want more information on the Medicare program as it relates to their state can find that information on the California Department of Insurance website or they can simply contact a licensed Medicare agent or carrier directly.
