Humana is one of the health insurance industry’s leaders in Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Medicare Part C, or MA). In fact, the company ranks as the second-largest provider (and the fourth-largest carrier overall) of Medicare Advantage plans (MA), which are private insurance policies that offer the same benefits as original Medicare along with additional features, notably prescription drug coverage. In addition, the company offers Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans or PDPs), both as part of its MA plans and individually.
Among Humana’s Medicare plans are multiple Humana Medicare Advantage plans, including Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and specific membership policies. Medicare Advantage plans are primarily paid for with federal funds but administered by private insurers. They combine original Medicare, which comprises Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), with Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans or PDPs).

The carrier heavily promotes its Humana Medicare Advantage business, which has 340,000 members. It is its largest and most profitable line of business. In January 2017, a federal judge blocked a merger between Aetna and Humana, ruling that the merger would reduce competition for consumers. In February 2017, the two companies announced that they had called off the merger due to the federal ruling.

The company’s Medicare-related product line includes supplemental insurance plans (Medigap), which require members to pay deductibles and coinsurance costs, as well as Medicaid, the federal health insurance for low-income individuals and families. Humana’s large network of providers and hospitals, along with an ample budget for additional services and benefits, ensures the satisfaction of its members and stockholders alike. The company’s focus on its Medicare plans, designed for different budgets, plays a big role in its 4-star rating.
Note: Humana and Aetna had sought to merge in 2015, but the effort has been abandoned as of February 2017. Had these two major entities combined forces, the resulting company would have become the nation’s leading Medicare Advantage insurer, providing coverage to 26 percent of all enrollees in the U.S. Due to the scope of the impact that this merger would have had on the economy and the healthcare industry, the merger faced an uphill battle for approval, which ultimately led to the federal government thwarting its success.
