Humana is one of the health insurance industry’s leaders in Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Medicare Part C, or MA). In fact, the company ranks as the second-largest provider (and the fourth-largest carrier overall) of Medicare Advantage (MA), which are private insurance policies that offer the same benefits as Original Medicare and prescription drug coverage. In addition, the company offers Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans, PDPs), both as part of its MA plans and individually.

Among Humana’s Medicare plans are multiple Humana Medicare Advantage plans, including: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and specific membership policies. Medicare Advantage plans are primarily paid with federal funds, but administered by private insurers. They combine Original Medicare, which is comprised of Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance), with Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans, PDPs).

Indeed, the carrier values its Humana Medicare Advantage business, as with 340,000 members, as its largest and most profitable line of business. From 2014-2015, the carrier’s MA enrollment increased by more than 350,000. But with a proposed merger between Humana and Aetna, the third-largest carrier, awaiting approval, enrollment could go much higher. While Humana already provides more than half of all Medicare Advantage plans in five states, this new carrier would provide Medicare Advantage coverage to approximately 4.7 million enrollees. In 2006, Humana launched an education campaign focusing on its commitment to both Medicare Advantage and its Part D prescription drug coverage.

Humana Medicare Plans

Humana offers various Medicare Advantage plans and PDPs through its website. Here, consumers can compare different policies and benefits and explore their options with the simple plan finder. As Medicare Advantage and related supplemental plans are offered by region, you just enter your ZIP code, and multiple, available plan options will be provided.

Both Humana Medicare Advantage plans and stand-alone PDPs are separated, allowing you to explore them individually. However, not all MA plans feature Part D plans; in these cases, consumers must purchase drug coverage separately. The plans’ prices may also vary, depending on enrollees’ income, retirement and social security. For MA plans, the carrier offers a wide array of Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and membership options, including:

HMO

Humana Gold Plus Medicare Advantage HMO

This provides enrollees with Original Medicare services and Part D (prescription drug coverage). As it’s an HMO plan, you can only visit in-network providers and facilities (except for emergencies). Coverage is cheaper, but you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket costs.

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facilities

PPO

PPO

PPO

  • Durable medical equipment
  • Diabetes programs and supplies
  • 24-hour nurse advice line
  • Alternative medicine
  • Discounts for dental, vision and hearing services

PDP

Humana Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

Not all MA plans feature prescription drug coverage, so members may need to purchase separate Humana PDPs. Fortunately, their PDPs rank high in quality and variety. Between 2006 and 2013, the company’s PDP enrollment increased by 19 percent. As stand-alone PDPs don’t provide medical coverage, you should already have Original Medicare. You can also add or remove prescription drug coverage or buy separate PDPs for lower MA premiums. Check for the plan’s annual prescription deductible; there may also be an annual premium.

Enrollees can select from various PDPs, including:
  • Humana Walmart Rx Plan PDP
  • Humana Preferred Rx Plan PDP
  • Humana Enhanced PDP

The company’s Medicare-related product line includes supplemental insurance plans (Medigap), which require members to pay deductibles and coinsurance costs. And, they provide coverage for Medicaid, the federal health insurance for low-income individuals and families. Humana’s large network of providers and hospitals, along with an ample budget for additional services and benefits, ensures the satisfaction of its members and stockholders alike. The company’s focus on its Medicare plans, designed for different budgets, plays a big role in its 4-star ratings.

Yet, despite its high enrollment, Humana’s future is unknown, as a proposed merger between Humana and Aetna, the industry’s third-largest carrier, was announced in July 2015. Should it be approved, this new company would become the nation’s leading Medicare Advantage insurer, providing coverage to 26 percent of all enrollees. As it would dramatically impact the healthcare industry, the merger faces a great deal of approval, including that from: the companies’ shareholders, state insurance regulators, provider groups and federal agencies and requirements, such as the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

Humana’s Medicare plans are well established in America. In fact, they have some of the top-quality insurance ratings of all the health providers in the United States. Humana Health Insurance Company bases its operations in Louisville, Kentucky, and it’s one of the largest healthcare insurers in the country.

This gives its plans a few benefits, such as a huge network of providers and hospitals, as well as a bigger budget for extra services. Humana insures an estimated 12 million people annually. You can find Medicare Advantage plans through Humana in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. In addition to Medicare plans, Humana also sells individual insurance and group insurance plans.
